What is Your Municipal New Year's Resolution?
Posted on by Sadie Colcord
With 2019 fast-approaching, the Municipal Services team at CERC is hard at work planning our strategy for best serving our client base over the coming year. We are evaluating everything we have learned in 2018 about the issues most important to our clients and working to strengthen the products that best serve them. Your town should be doing this, too.
You can create your very own Municipal New Year’s Resolution for economic development by doing an informal SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis. Take some time to think about and write down what you see as the identity of your town’s business community as well as the strengths and weaknesses in retaining existing and attracting new businesses and development consistent with the character of your community. Think about your location, land use regulatory process, workforce composition and training options, industry composition, any incentives offered, etc. Then, consider how you have been promoting those strengths and addressing those weaknesses – where have you been successful, and where have you been challenged? To guide your strategy, write down a list of action items that you can take to improve in areas where you have struggled and maintain the good work in the areas where you have been successful. Make sure you share and discuss this list with all municipal staff and elected officials involved in the development process so that everyone can buy into your vision. This is your Municipal New Year’s Resolution for economic development – get ready to hit the ground running in 2019!
